Adrian Secord

I am a PhD student at the Media Research Laboratory of New York University.

I have worked rendering non-photorealistic graphics, physics-based models for simulation, and, most recently, two-dimensional layout problems. My supervisors for this degree are professors Denis Zorin here at NYU and David Salesin at the University of Washington.

Research

My current research is on two-dimensional layout problems in computer science. A layout problem is exactly what you might think it is: you are given

  1. A blank canvas (computer display or piece of paper),
  2. A set of visual elements (images, text, lines, boxes, color, white space), and
  3. A set of constraints (this element needs to be next that that element, or this element needs to be of some minimum size)
and your job is to place the elements on the canvas, obeying the constraints as much as possible and avoiding common problems like overlap or line crossings. It's a lot harder than it sounds and also widely applicable: common examples include this web page, the user interface of your operating system, scientific visualizations, etc. It's an exciting intersection of computer science, graphic design, and psychology.

In the past I have worked in physics-based models for graphics and non-photorealistic rendering:
