The Gauss map at a point can be used to classify the local geometry by
archetypal geometries. A point is called
- elliptic if
(e.g. a sphere),
- hyperbolic if
(e.g. a saddle),
- parabolic if
and
(e.g. a cylinder), and
- planar if
.
