>>i have only one question, and i feel like a political moron for not
>>knowing about this, but who is/was patty hearst? and what did she do
>>to make herself famous and get into a camper song?

Here's where i establish my "too old for generation x" bona fides.
Patty Hearst's kidnapping was the first media event i was completely
conscious of (Vietnam and Watergate were a little hazy).

oh, my beloved tania

"Tania" was Hearst's codename in the SLA

>in this fashion. Many people didn't believe it, until the SLA robbed a bank
>on Irving St. in San Francisco and the surveillance cameras showed her taking
>part with an AK-47. Subsequently, most of the SLA was wiped out in a raid on

how i long to see your face
photographed in 15-second intervals
in a bank in San Leandro

(Guess Camper got the location of the bank wrong.) the famous "film" was a
serious of still shots by the aforementioned surveillance cameras, grainy,
and shown repeatedly on the news, a la Rodney King.

a polaroid of you, Cinque,
with a seven-headed dragon
in a house in Daly City

Cinq-you was the leader of the SLA. The dragon was its logo. Daly City is an
industrial town just south of SF, where I guess one of their hideouts were.

Not knowing what Symbionese means, I was always a little unsure if the SLA
was for real or some kind of parody of other militant groups.

don't be sad
my beloved tania
they say your father never liked Stephen Weed anyway
hired a detective to follow him around

Weed was her boyfriend at Berkeley, from whose apartment she was kidnapped.

oh my beloved revolutionary sweetheart
i can see your newsprint face turned yellow in the gutter
it makes me sad
how i long for the days when you came
to liberate us from boredom
from driving around
from the hours between
five and seven in the evening

The omnipresent media event, mockery of the pseudo-revolutionary....

my beloved tania
we carry your gun deep within our hearts
for no better reason than our lives have no meaning
and we want to be on television

>getting out, although she did take a part in John Waters' movie Hairspray (I
>think that's the one).

She also had a great role in Serial Mom, as the juror who commits the
unforgivable faux pas of wearing white shoes after memorial day (or is it
before?)
